FAQs

Why has most of the art collection never been made public before now?

For many years, the collection was divided among the artist’s four children and stored in multiple locations across the United States and Canada. After John Menihan’s unexpected death, there was no sustained organized effort to bring the work together or present it publicly. Menihan focused on creating art rather than marketing it, and over decades of steady production he left behind an extensive body of work that had yet to be fully seen.

Why are there no prices
on the artwork?

Much of the collection has only recently been brought together and is being carefully reviewed, documented, and presented for the first time. Rather than assigning prices prematurely, the focus at this stage is on scholarship, context, and thoughtful curation.

Historically, works by John C. Menihan that did enter the marketplace were acquired by respected institutions, galleries, and private collectors. Pricing decisions will be guided by that record, by the depth and quality of the work itself, and by responsible stewardship of the artist’s legacy—not by impulse or volume.

What makes this artist and
his work so unique?

Rarely does a single artist achieve sustained excellence across multiple demanding mediums. John C. Menihan did so in four—watercolor, stone lithography, drawing, and painting—bringing a distinctive and recognizable visual voice to each.

Regardless of medium, his work is defined by fluid, confident line; a playful yet disciplined hand; and a sophisticated command of light and shadow. Guided by an active imagination and a deep love of the act of making, Menihan produced an unusually large and remarkably cohesive body of work over a prolific lifetime.
